SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team fell to Northern Colorado, 6-4, in the Roadrunner Classic consolation final on Sunday at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners (5-9) couldn’t overcome the Bears (6-9), with sophomore Reagan Stoudt (0-4) getting tagged with the loss, while Ellyse Hydock (2-3) earned the win and Aiyana Cordero (1) the save.
Sophomore Skylar Rucker logged her first collegiate home run, and freshman Brookelynn Meador joined her in launching longballs on the afternoon. Rucker, Meador, junior Taryn Madlock and classmate Jaeden Burnham all recorded multiple hits on the afternoon.
Northern Colorado struck first, opening the contest with back-to-back doubles. A pop-up and a double play ended the frame, before a Rucker solo shot in the bottom half saw a 1-1 tie.
UNC regained the lead in the top of the third, as a hit batter plated a run, ahead of a three-run home run that put them up, 5-1. The Bears added another to their total in the top of the fourth, and UTSA got one back in the home half on a Meador solo shot.
Burnham and Rucker singled to open the bottom of the fifth, ahead of a freshman Demiree Stafford walk that loaded the bases with no outs. Sophomore Sabrina Wick worked an infield single to plate junior Emmersyn Villa, who entered as a pinch runner. From there, UNC found three outs to limit the damage and keep their 6-3 lead intact.
Looking to rally in the bottom of the seventh, a bunt single for Wick and a redshirt sophomore Makayla Madrid walk put two on for Madlock, who knocked in Wick with an RBI single. UTSA, however, was unable to complete the comeback, falling 6-4.
UTSA will next face Southeastern Louisiana at home on Thursday at 4 p.m., before hosting the Birds Up Bash across the weekend that will see North Dakota, New Mexico State, Saint Francis and UT Arlington come to town.
