About the UTSA Roadrunners
The Roadrunners brought the 17-game loss streak to an end on a nationally televised game at Charlotte on Sunday, rallying from a 13-point deficit with a 20-0 run coming down the stretch in the second half. UTSA held Charlotte without a field goal for eight minutes and finished things off at the free throw line of the 88-79 conference road win. Six Roadrunners scored in double-figures, paced by Jamir Simpson (20), Brent Moss (16) and Baboucarr Njie (16). UTSA averages 69.9 ppg on 39.9 percent shooting, going over 41.5 percent in three of the last four games and averaging 76.5 ppg in that stretch. The Roadrunners average 36.2 rpg, including 12.4 offensive rpg, while ranking 58th nationally with 4.4 bpg.
Simpson has been a steady leader for the Roadrunners throughout the year, with the grad student coming up big at Charlotte for his ninth game over 20 points. He averages 16.1 ppg to rank eighth in the American, along with 2.0 apg and 4.0 rpg. Brent Moss has been on a quick rise lately, moving up to 9.8 ppg and 4.7 rpg after putting up double-figures in six of the last seven games and averaging 6.1 rpg in that run. Baboucarr Njie leads the team with 5.3 rpg and a conference-fourth 1.8 bpg, also fourth in scoring at 8.4 ppg.
About the Florida Atlantic Owls
The Owls came out of the non-conference slate as one of the hottest teams in the American and reeled off five consecutive league wins shortly after downing UTSA in the 40-point conference-opening win. However, at 14-12 (6-7 AMER), the times have been more challenging for FAU, going 3-6 away with six consecutive losses back to Jan. 25 at South Florida. The Owls average an American-third 81.0 ppg on a league-second 46.3 percent shooting with 33.2 percent beyond the arc. Defensively, FAU gives 75.3 ppg and 43.2 percent shooting, averaging an NCAA-37th 39.4 rpg with an American-leading 5.7 bpg (seventh NCAA).
Injuries have been a factor as conference play has reached February. Redshirt sophomore guard Devin Vanterpool missed a couple of games but leads FAU with 15.8 ppg, a team-high 6.2 rpg, 57 assists and a team-high 37 steals. Indiana transfer Kanaan Carlyle missed a handful of games and puts up 14.0 ppg with 66 assists to date. Rounding out the top scorers, USC transfer Isaiah Elohim is one of only two Owls to start every game, scoring 12.8 ppg with 4.8 rpg. The trio accounts for 59 percent of FAU’s threes, shooting 35 percent from the perimeter. At forward, UCLA transfer Devin Williams has made every starting lineup and is fourth in the nation with an American-high 2.7 bpg (70 total) with 5.2 rpg.
Series History
The last meeting with the Owls didn’t fare well for the Roadrunners, as FAU lit the first-half scoreboard in Boca Raton, knocking down 18 three-pointers total at a 51.4-percent rate en route to a 110-70 win. This is the 20th meeting in the series and FAU leads 13-6, tied 5-5 at the Convo. UTSA has lost six straight in the series. The last Convo meeting in 2024 with a 112-103 overtime win for then-No. 23 FAU. The last series victory for UTSA was an 86-75 victory on Feb. 13, 2021, following up an 84-80 victory the prior night during the COVID season.
