‘Runners fall to No. 1 Texas in UTSA Invitational Finale

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball teams couldn’t overcome No. 1 Texas, falling to the defending national champions, 10-0, via the run rule in what represented the finale of the UTSA Invitational.

The Roadrunners (0-3) fell to the Longhorns (4-1) with 959 fans packing the stands for a new program single-season record, and the second-most in Roadrunner Field history. In total, 6,734 fans passed through the turnstiles to attend the event.

Hannah Wells (1-1) earned the win for Texas, while junior Meredith Schmitt (0-1) was pegged with the loss. At the plate, junior Taryn Madlock, freshman Demiree Stafford and senior Madison Hornback all logged hits, with Stafford logging a double.

The Longhorns plated one in the first on a wild pitch and added three in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Freshman Arlette Hernandez tossed a scoreless third, ahead of a crooked number in the second and four runs in the fifth that put Texas up, 10-0. Sophomore Skylar Rucker walked and Stafford belted a two-out double in the bottom of the inning as UTSA looked to extend the contest. The Longhorns, however, got the final out, securing the 10-0 victory.

The ‘Runners will look to bounce back on Wednesday, as they open the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge against Southern Illinois at 2 p.m. inside Nancy Almaraz Stadium in Mexico.
