COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The UTSA track & field teams wrapped up the first competition of the New Year on Saturday at R.A. "Murray" Fasken '38 Indoor Track, earning a pair of golds to highlight the second day of action at Texas A&M’s Ted Nelson Invitational. Redshirt junior Jemuel Miller and sophomore Mia Lien came away as event winners in the first major action of the year.
With his first triple jump in over a year and his first indoor attempts since the 2023 season, three-time All-American Miller leapt 15.69 (51-5.75) on his second attempt to claim the top spot and secure the gold for the first UTSA medal of the day. Hitting 14.87
(48-9.5) on his first jump of the day, freshman John Williams III also earned fourth place for the Roadrunners.
Also a two-time All-American, Lien outlasted the field through five rounds on the final women’s field event of the meet, falling short of a would-be school record at 1.84m but securing the event victory at 1.80m (5-10.75). Junior Edlin Laur also arrived at sixth place with a jump of 1.65m (5-5).
In the long jump, freshman Jayden Williams hit 7.15m (23-5.5) for fifth in the men’s long jump, while sophomore Brina Likar was sixth on the women’s side at 5.68m (18-7.75).
A distance-heavy contingent for the Roadrunners in College Station, freshman Madison Gilliam earned seventh place in the women’s 800-meter, ahead of classmates Annaliese Muñoz (2:24.35) and Brianna Venegas (2:36.14) in ninth and 10th place, respectively. On the men’s side of the half mile, sophomore Cortlin Salge came in at 1:53.85 for ninth place. In the men’s 3,000-meter, freshman Austin Lyda (8:54.05) and sophomore Diego Ramirez (9:22.25) went back-to-back at seventh and eighth place, while Jocelyn Karry finished ninth in the women’s race at 10:00.66. Junior O.J. Ruiz was just three seconds off a PR in the men’s mile, finishing 10th among collegiate performers at 4:20.56.
Opening the day with the top throw, sophomore Ryan Stillman finished seventh in the men’s shot put on a toss of 14.16m (46-5.5), ahead of multi-event freshman Janre Jõgi, who finished ninth at 13.15m (43-1.75).
Making her collegiate debut just days after starting her first semester at UTSA, freshman Elizabete Kocina earned 10th place in the 200-meter at 24.54 seconds – seventh among collegiate performers.
Up Next: The Roadrunners will be back in action on the first weekend in February, headed back to Fasken Indoor for the Charlie Thomas Invitational, Feb. 6-7.
