‘Runners race past Owls, 79-42

BOCA RATON, Fla.— On Friday, the UTSA women’s basketball team used a sensational effort to top Florida Atlantic, 79-42, in American Conference action at Baldwin Arena.

The Roadrunners (9-7, 4-1 American) bested the Owls (8-10, 2-4 American) as senior Ereauna Hardaway tallied a season-high 20 points with five rebounds and three assists.  Classmate Cheyenne Rowe was also stellar, charting 19 points with eight rebounds and two blocks, and freshman Adriana Robles joined the pair in scoring double-digits with 10. Sophomore Mia Hammonds put in a solid shift off the bench with seven points, seven boards and multiple blocks.

As a team, UTSA shot 54% from the floor to FAU’s 28%, while recording 12 more points in the paint and eight more rebounds. The ‘Runners also dished out 12 more assists, 10 more second chance points and eight more points off the bench.

UTSA scored the first five of the contest off a Rowe bucket and a Robles triple. FAU got a shot to fall before a sophomore Emilia Dannebauer layup saw a 7-2 advantage. A Rowe three-pointer later in the frame saw a 14-8 edge, and back-to-back buckets for Hardaway capped off the period with an 18-9 UTSA lead.

Consecutive Hammonds makes worked a 22-11 score line in the second, forcing an FAU timeout. UTSA remained hot out of the break as Hardaway, Rowe and Hammonds combined to increase the Roadrunner run to 15. The Owls finally tickled the twine on a pair of free throws, snapping a five-minute scoring drought and working a 33-13 score line. UTSA then finished the half strong, carrying a 41-16 lead into the locker room.

The ‘Runners then outscored the opposition 20-16 in the third, fora 61-32 edge into the final frame.

It was more of the same in the fourth, as the Roadrunners cruised to a 79-42 victory.

UTSA will now head back to San Antonio, where East Carolina awaits on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
