‘Runners fall to Lady Rebels in nonconference action

SAN ANTONIO— The UTSA women’s basketball team suffered a 66-39 defeat at the hands of UNLV on Wednesday in nonconference action at the Convocation Center.   

The Roadrunners (3-4, 0-0 The American) fell to the Lady Rebels (5-3, 0-0 Mountain West), as UNLV got off to a fast start and never looked back, snapping UTSA’s program-record 17-game home winning streak.

Senior Cheyenne Rowe led the Roadrunners in scoring, logging nine points with eight rebounds, while sophomore Damara Allen managed seven, and junior Idara Udo six with seven boards. Additionally, sophomore Marie Han made her UTSA debut.

UNLV started hot, scoring the first 13 points before Allen connected on a jumper for UTSA’s first two points of the afternoon. The Lady Rebels finished off the frame strong, carrying a 20-2 edge into the second quarter.

After matching each other for the majority of the stanza, UTSA sparked a 7-0 run featuring makes by Rowe, freshman Adriana Robles, and sophomore Mia Hammonds to trim the deficit to 13.  UNLV answered with back-to-back makes to work a 34-17 score line at the half.

An 8-0 run for the Lady Rebels saw a 46-21 edge midway through the third, ahead of a 48-25 score entering the fourth.

From there, UNLV secured a 66-39 victory.

UTSA will wrap up the week taking on Baylor, with a 2 p.m. contest set for Sunday at Foster Pavilion in Waco, Texas.
