Hardaway, Rowe lead ‘Runners past Green Wave, 65-63

SAN ANTONIO— The UTSA women’s basketball team used a quartet of double-digit scoring performances to pick up a 65-63 victory over Tulane in an American Conference opener on Tuesday at the Convocation Center.

The Roadrunners (6-6, 1-0 American) topped the Green Wave (5-8, 0-1 American) in a bout that featured 19 lead changes as senior Ereauna Hardaway led the contest with 16 points to go with seven assists, five rebounds, and a steal. Junior Cheyenne Rowe logged her second double-double of the season to the tune of 13 points and 12 rebounds, while freshman Adriana Robles scored 11 and junior Jayda Holiman 10. Additionally, sophomore Mia Hammonds snagged eight rebounds and sophomore Damara Allen charted nine points.

As a team, UTSA hauled in 24 more rebounds than its opposition, scored seven more points on the break, and six more on second chances.

Robles connected from deep and Hardaway finished a layup to afford UTSA an 11-7 lead early in the first, but a later Tulane triple pulled them within one. Allen then sparked a 7-2 surge, and the Green Wave buried one from beyond-the-arc for an 18-15 score line entering the second.

Tulane knotted things up with a three-pointer to open the stanza, and another bucket issued a 20-18 lead for the Green Wave. The squads exchanged blows before Hardaway knocked down a pair from the charity stripe and Robles beat the buzzer for a 31-26 halftime lead.

The Green Wave raced back in the third, using back-to-back triples to take a 32-31 advantage. From there, neither team could gain an inch as a Holiman jumper sent the contest into the final frame with UTSA up, 48-47.

The battle raged on in the fourth, as Holiman hit a triple to take a 59-55 edge, but Tulane again replied, eventually working a 59-59 tie. Hardaway drained one from deep to go up 62-59, and a later layup resulted in a 64-61 score line with under a minute to play. The Green Wave used two free throws to claw within one, and Hammonds hit a freebie for a 65-63 lead with two ticks remaining. Tulane wasn’t able to get its final shot to fall, cementing the UTSA victory.

UTSA will now take on Temple, with a 1:30 p.m. CT matchup set for Saturday at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
