SAN ANTONIO––On Wednesday, four scored in double-figures as the UTSA women’s basketball team took down UIW, 74-57 in the Hometown Showdown at the McDermott Center.
The Roadrunners (2-2, 0-0 The American) bested the Cardinals (1-3, 0-0 Southland) with senior Cheyenne Rowe posting 17 points for a career-high in back-to-back games. Junior Idara Udo logged an 11-point, 13-rebound double-double, and senior Ereauna Hardaway charted 15 points with four rebounds, three assists, and a block. with Freshman Adriana Robles scored 11 for her collegiate-best, helping UTSA shot 52% from the field to UIW’s 38%, Additionally, the ‘Runners snagging 21 more rebounds and recorded 10 more second-chance points.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 6-2 edge in the first quarter, ahead of buckets for Hardaway and Rowe that knotted things up. UIW responded with another triple, but Udo and sophomore Mia Hammonds connected for a 10-9 Roadrunner advantage. UIW got a shot to fall, ahead of a 10-0 UTSA run that put the ‘Runners up 20-11. The Cardinals finished the frame strong, for a 21-20 score line entering the second.
A sophomore Damara Allen and-one early in the stanza saw a 26-20 Roadrunner edge, and the squad’s exchanged blows until Robles finished through contact for a 33-24 lead. After a UIW free throw, the ‘Runners sparked another 6-0 surge before taking a 41-29 lead into the locker room.
Allen connected from deep early in the third, ahead of a back-and-forth battle that lasted the majority of the quarter. A UIW three-pointer later saw a 59-48 score that still favored UTSA, and Rowe hit a jumper to close out the period with the ‘Runners up, 61-48.
Robles hit from beyond the arc to cap off an 8-2 stretch in the fourth that built a 69-54 edge. From there, UTSA never looked back, cruising to a 74-57 victory.
UTSA will now head to Frisco, Texas, for the Hoopfest Women’s Basketball Challenge at the Comerica Center, with contests against Auburn and Grand Canyon on the docket.
