SAN ANTONIO––On Thursday, the UTSA women’s basketball team secured a 64-41 victory over Texas State in the Battle for I-35, with head coach Karen Aston securing her 350th career victory.
The Roadrunners (1-2, 0-0 The American) bested the Bobcats (0-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) in what was UTSA’s 17th consecutive win in the Convocation Center. The ‘Runners also secured back-to-back wins against Texas State for the first time since the 2013 season.
Senior Cheyenne Rowe and sophomore Mia Hammonds each charted a game-high 16 points, both of which represent career-highs. Rowe tallied eight rebounds and four assists, while Hammonds pulled down five boards. Junior forward Idara Udo finished one point and one rebound shy of a double-double, while sophomore Emilia Dannebauer racked up eight rebounds and scored six.
UTSA started hot, working an early 13-2 lead in a stretch that saw multiple sophomore Damara Allen triples. The Bobcats pulled within seven, but a three-pointer by junior Jayda Holiman saw a 16-6 score line. A Hammonds layup shortly after capped off the first frame with UTSA leading, 21-12.
The Roadrunners remained hot in the second with a 9-2 run, issuing a 32-14 edge. TXST sparked an 11-1 surge of their own to trim their deficit to eight. From there, Udo and Dannebauer got layups to fall en route to a 37-25 halftime score.
Texas State opened the scoring in the third, ahead of six straight for UTSA that put the ‘Runners up, 43-27. UTSA outscored the opposition 17-6 across the stanza, cruising to a 54-31 advantage entering the fourth, before cementing a 64-41 victory.
UTSA will now turn its attention toward UIW, with a 7 p.m. matchup across town at the McDermott Center on Nov. 19.
