About the Roadrunners
The Roadrunners are riding a wave of momentum right now, after entering the American Conference Championships as the fifth seed and powering their way to a third conference title and the first crown in the American. UTSA defeated fourth-seeded UAB (2-1) to move on and face regular season champion and NCAA No. 3 Memphis – rallying in the final five minutes of regulation from a 3-1 deficit and then advancing past the stunned Tigers on a 3-1 penalty shootout. In the championship final, UTSA broke the deadlock against sixth-seeded Rice in the final 1:23 of overtime, as redshirt freshman Bri Carrigan sliced up the middle of the field and buried the game- and title-winning goal.

After spending the entire season leaning on their defensive prowess, including a school-record nine-match unbeaten streak, the Roadrunners have netted 10 goals in the past five outings. Standing at the forefront is senior midfielder and captain Zoë May, who leads UTSA with six goals, 17 on-target shots and a .531 SOG percentage – while also adding two assists. Coming in hot down the stretch, early-graduating junior midfielder Michelle Polo has scored four of her five goals in the past five games, logging 32 shots and a .433 shooting percentage. Also making big moves at the tail end of the season, redshirt sophomore defender Aaliyaiah Durden has registered three of her four as gamewinning goals, and the fourth as game-tying goal against Memphis – taking 9-of-18 shots on goal. Rounding out UTSA’s scorers, redshirt freshman forward Ava Jackson has three goals and three assists. Topping UTSA in shots (43) and assists (5), freshman forward Brooklyn Bailey is always a threat but kept Rice busy in the final with a career-high seven shots – four on goal to tie May for most SOG. A standout from day one, junior goalkeeper Jasmine Kessler just set the UTSA career wins record at 22, already holding the shutouts (15) and draws (12). Kessler ranks 69th nationally and second in the American with a 0.88 goals-against-average, and 55th nationally for an American-second .822 save percentage.

Matching the same count from the 2022 championship and NCAA squad, UTSA had four players recognized as members of the 2025 American All-Conference Teams, with defender Kameron Kloza (first team), goalkeeper Kessler (second team), midfielder May (third team) and forward Bailey (all-freshman team) each receiving their well-deserved accolades.

About the Texas Tech Red Raiders
Now in the 19th season under head coach Tom Stone, the Red Raiders are 13-2-4 and heading into their third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. Finishing fourth in the Big 12 Conference regular season, TTU was eliminated by fellow NCAA seed Baylor on a 7-6 penalty shootout in the opening round of a stacked league tournament.

Receiving a No. 6 seed and entering the week at No. 18 in the national rankings, the Red Raiders scored multiple goals in 13 of their contests, earning an unbeaten streak of their own that ended at 11 games. TTU averages 1.89 goals on an NCAA 14th-most (Big 12-leading) 17.37 shots and NCAA-42nd 7.21 shots per game. As a squad, TTU goes .415 in shooting accuracy. The Red Raiders also have a seasoned and effective defense, with the Big 12’s best GAA (0.73) and an .803 save percentage.

Two-time All-Big 12 First Team forward Taylor Zdrojewski ranks ninth in the nation with 15 goals (six gamewinners), coming in 38th nationally with 3.63 shots per game (69 total) and 26 on-target shots this season – also with three assists. Redshirt senior defender Macy Blackburn is an All-American, earning back-to-back Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year awards and is TTU’s all-time assists leader. Blackburn is fourth in the NCAA with 12 assists on the year, while also shooting .563 and logging four goals of her own. Midfielder Peyton Parsons earned her second-straight First Team All-Big 12 honor, scoring six times with four assists. In goal, senior Faith Nguyen has started every game and has recorded nine shutouts, a 0.73 GAA and 57 saves on a 0.803 save percentage.

Series history
This will be the seventh meeting between these teams and the first since 2021. The Roadrunners are looking for their first win in the series and this will be the fifth edition played in Lubbock.

UTSA Postseason History
UTSA is now undefeated in conference tournaments since 2021 and making its first NCAA appearance since the 2022 squad won the CUSA Championship to face No. 2 seed TCU in Fort Worth – dropping a 3-1 decision to the Horned Frogs in the opening round. As a program, the Roadrunners have a 10-8-2 overall record in postseason play, and are 0-2 in NCAA tournament games after previously reaching the tournament in 2022 (Conference USA Tournament Champion) and 2010 (Southland Conference Tournament Champion). In 2010, the Roadrunners also traveled to No. 2 Portland.

UP NEXT: The winner of Friday’s opening-round matchup in Lubbock will take on the second round against the victor between No. 3 Tennessee and North Carolina. That second-round match will be played on Nov. 20 at the higher seed’s campus.
