About the Roadrunners
No doubt that the first week was a scrappy one, as the Roadrunners held back-to-back Big 12 Conference teams scoreless for 170 minutes, locking up a draw and an extremely narrow loss to a top 10 team. UTSA went 0-0 for the final against Houston on opening night, while on Sunday the Roadrunners pushed ninth-ranked TCU to the limit in a physical outing before the Horned Frogs notched an 80’ goal to sneak out of San Antonio with a win.
It was also a busy week for junior goalkeeper Jasmine Kessler, who logged 11 saves on the week and crested 100 career saves in the first half against Houston, putting together a 0.50 GAA and a NCAA 77th-ranked .917 save percentage. Through two contests, the Roadrunners have averaged 7.5 shots per game against some very challenging defenses, putting in a .467 SOG percentage. Senior forward Izzy Lane is leading the team with four shots, while freshman Brooklyn Bailey, redshirt freshman Leah Varela and junior Michelle Polo have a pair apiece among the eight Roadrunners with an attempt so far.
About the St. Mary’s Rattlers
A perennially tough squad under sixth-year head coach Kevin Driggs, the Rattlers have been to the NCAA Division II tournament in two of the last four years. St. Mary’s is led by senior midfielder Shelby Paniagua a 2023 All-American and 2024 All-Region honoree who paced the Rattlers with 22 points, scoring eight goals and adding six assists a year ago – notably leading NCAA Division II with a perfect 5-for-5 return on penalty kicks. Returning to the Rattlers after an injury, junior forward Sydney Varela lost a chunk of 2024 to injury but was a First Team All-Lone Star Conference player in 2023, scoring seven goals for StMU. A third team all-conference forward during her 2024 sophomore campaign, Malia Dominguez put up 12 points with five goals and two assists last year. The trio are complemented by the addition of first-year junior forward Elena Kossler, who scored 177 goals in six years while playing in the Austrian Tyrolean League. Also new with high expectations is senior goalkeeper Haley Faucette, who made 97 saves and logged a 13-6-5 record and nine shutouts across her four-year stretch at Wingate.
The Rattlers opened on an exhibition at Houston on Sunday, suffering a 4-0 loss against the Cougars. Faucette played the first half and had four saves before turning over GK duties to redshirt freshman Quetza Garza. Houston outshot StMU 20-2 in the contest.
Series history
Facing each other as exhibition foes numerous times, the Roadrunners and Rattlers are meeting in the regular season for only the second time in the series, and in back-to-back seasons. These teams met for the first time last Aug. 25 at Park West, with UTSA pulling out a 1-0 win with Lane scoring the lone goal to propel head coach Derek Pittman to his 100th career win.
UP NEXT: The Roadrunners will keep the action against in-state foes, as former Southland Conference foe Lamar will travel southwest from Beaumont to face the Roadrunners for the first time since 2021. The Roadrunners and Cardinals will meet for the 10th time on Sunday, Aug. 24, for the inaugural Welcome to the Birdcage / Welcome Back Students game at Park West.
