About the Roadrunners
It was a physical and scrappy match to open UTSA’s 20th season on Thursday against Big 12 opponent Houston, wrapping up in a scoreless draw – although the Roadrunners had an opportunity to steal the result in the final minute on an unsuccessful penalty kick.
The Roadrunners registered 10 shots to Houston’s 18 with on-target attempts going to Aaliyaiah Durden, Izzy Lane and Bryn Maxwell. However, it was junior goalkeeper Kessler that highlighted the night for UTSA, matching her career second-most saves at seven, while also surpassing the 100-save milestone in the first half. With UTSA carrying 18 potential first-time players (11 freshmen, 3 transfers, 4 returning redshirts) into the season, 19 Roadrunners appeared in the opener – 12 players from that group saw action against the Cougars.
With Thursday’s 11th career shutout for Kessler, UTSA showed its defensive prowess once again, making it 61 of the team’s 78 games since 2020 holding opponents to one goal or less (78.2 percent). UTSA was one of five American squads to register a shutout in its opener. Since 2020, UTSA has recorded a team goals-against-average at 0.84 and has logged a 0.81 GAA since 2022 with Kessler logging 31 games in net.
About the TCU Horned Frogs
Tying for the highest-ranked opponent to visit Park West, ninth-ranked TCU flexed its offensive muscle on Thursday night in Fort Worth, blowing visiting Pepperdine out of the water with a 6-1 result. Making her first start since coming over from San Francisco, senior goalkeeper Kira Ybarra went the distance against Pepperdine, making one save against seven total shots, allowing one 55’ goal. Offensively, freshman Kamdyn Fullers scored twice with an assist on three shots, while AJ Hennessey, Emma Yolinsky, Zoe Calyer and Seven Castain accounted for the other four. TCU outshot Pepperdine 17-8, logging six shots on goal.
Winning the Big 12 Conference regular season title for the third time in 2024, the Horned Frogs ended last year in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, finishing 17-4-2 at 16th in the final rankings – reaching as high as No. 7 during the season. Heading into the season, three TCU players were selected for preseason All-Big 12 honors, sophomore midfielder Morgan Brown, senior forward Seven Castain and junior defender Bella Diorio – with six TCU players appearing on the United Soccer Coaches DI Players to Watch list. Named an All-American in 2024, Castain co-led the Big 12 scoring lead at 13 goals, along with six assists. Diorio also earned All-America honors, scoring 11 times with four assists. Also appearing on the Freshman All-Big 12 team, Brown scored four times with a pair of assists. TCU added eight transfers and nine freshmen among the 17 newcomers for 2025. The Horned Frogs graduated their primary goalkeeper from last year.
The 2024 TCU squad scored an average of 2.35 goals per game off 17.3 shots (.411 on-goal percentage), while recording a 0.87 GAA. The defensive effort extended beyond just the keeper, as TCU only logged 2.3 saves per game with only 20 goals allowed in 23 contests – collecting seven shutouts on the year.
Series history
Sunday will mark the first meeting since facing off in the 2022 NCAA Tournament and the ninth time in the series, which TCU leads 8-0. In the last meeting on Nov. 11, 2022, UTSA saw a 3-1 setback in postseason play. TCU’s last trip to San Antonio was Sept. 24 with a 4-1 TCU win – the series dates back to UTSA’s inaugural season in 2006.
UP NEXT: Bark at the Park is coming to Park West as UTSA hosts cross-town opposition from St. Mary’s, taking on the Rattlers for the second time and in back-to-back years at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21. UTSA will close the week with a Sunday, Aug. 24 matchup against Lamar at Park West that closes off a four-game season-opening homestand.
