UTSA announces addition of David Zuniga

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox announced on Thursday, Aug. 7, that the Roadrunners will add Mission, Texas distance runner David Zuniga to the Roadrunners’ squad for the upcoming season. Joining the Roadrunners’ this upcoming fall semester, working with new distance coach Harrison Tillman.

"With David, we can see a progression of year-to-year growth,” Fox said. “We’re excited to get him to campus and start building on that foundation to help him achieve his goals in the classroom and in competition.”

Coming to San Antonio out of McAllen’s Sharyland Pioneer High School, Zuniga set program records in the mile and two-mile races, and was the District 13-5A, Area 31/32-5A and A/6A Area champion in both the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter, earning bronze in both events at the Region IV Championships. At that meet, he recorded a career-best 3,200m of 9:33.93 and logged his 4:18.22 top 1,600m time with an 11th-place finish at the 96th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. On the cross country course, Zuniga earned the silver medal at the 2024 District 31-5A Cross Country Championships in McAllen, registering personal-best and school-record 5k of 15:29.00. He went on to finish 11th at the UIL 1A-6A Region IV Championship. He was a two-time Regional performer, finished 55th at the UIL State Championships as a senior and was selected to compete in the Nike Cross Regionals (NXR) South Championships in the Woodlands last fall. In indoor competition, Zuniga collected silver in the two-mile and one-mile during the 2025 Texas High School Indoor Championship in College Station, as well as a silver-medal 800-meter performance of 1:57.83.
