SAN ANTONIO – UTSA men’s basketball coach Austin Claunch announced on Friday another addition to the 2024-25 Roadrunners roster, as UTSA welcomes MEAC All-Defensive forward Daniel Akitoby for Claunch’s second season in San Antonio.
“Daniel provides the kind of hard-playing approach that we expect to see in our program,” Claunch said. “He’s a proven paint defender, helped Morgan lead their league in blocks and he led the conference on the boards, working both ends of the court. On top of that, he finishes around the rim and will be a great addition to our frontcourt.”
A 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward, Akitoby comes to San Antonio following two seasons at Morgan State in Baltimore, Maryland. He led the Bears in games (32) and starts (25) last season, averaging 9.4 points on a team-best 59.3 percent shooting from the floor, with team highs of 7.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game – all in just 24 minutes per outing. Akitoby led the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with 10 double-doubles, also topping the league in total rebounds (232) and rebounds per game, boosted by an NCAA-40th 3.09 offensive boards per contest – earning a spot on the 2024-25 MEAC All-Defensive Team. In his first season at Morgan, he saw more limited time with 1.4 points and 1.3 rebounds on just 4.5 minutes per game, still shooting 54.5 percent.
Akitoby began his collegiate career at Santa Monica College, playing 22 games after his second year was cut short while averaged 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds. Overall at SMC, Akitoby averaged 9.1 points, 5.7 rebounds (2.3 offensive) and 1.2 blocks per game, shooting 48.8 percent from the floor and 80.4 percent at the free throw line. Originally hailing from Fairfax, Virginia, he played high school basketball at Falls Church High School.
