AUSTIN – It’s a certainty that May 30, 2025, will go down as one of the most significant days in UTSA Baseball history. The Roadrunners’ 10-2 victory against Kansas State on Friday at Disch-Falk Field marked the first NCAA postseason win in program history.
But the day will always have an added special meaning for assistant coach Ryan Aguayo. He and his wife, Valerie, welcomed their second child – Alexandria – into the world at 9:23 a.m. on Friday.
“My wife called and said, ‘Get to San Antonio and get to the hospital because we’re having a baby,’” Aguayo said. “It was an awesome day and lots of fun.”
From the team hotel in downtown Austin, Aguayo texted UTSA head coach Pat Hallmark before 5:30 a.m. to let him know he’d be heading back to San Antonio.
“It’s a big day for him,” Hallmark said. “He’s been running around. It’s fortunate that we’re close so he can go home and be with his new baby and his wife.”
By 5 p.m. Friday, Aguayo was back on the field in Austin for in-and-out drills, helping the Roadrunners prepare to take on Kansas State. Aguayo, who serves as UTSA’s hitting coach, helped direct the team’s dynamic offense to an impressive performance on one of the biggest stages.
Making its fourth all-time NCAA Regional appearance and playing in its seventh postseason game all-time, UTSA set new NCAA postseason program records for runs scored (10), hits (10), RBI (8), walks (6), home runs (2) and at-bats (35). Norris McClure extended his hit streak to 24 games with his solo home run in the third and James Taussig extended the Roadrunners’ advantage with a three-run home run in the sixth.
“It was a special time for me personally,” Aguayo said. “Our guys came through and they played a good game. I appreciate my wife so much. She’s a rockstar and she knows the job. These guys are rockstars too. It’s a special day for sure.”
