Roadrunners defeat Rice in record-setting night

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA fights back from a seven-run deficit to defeat Rice 15-7 in game one of the three-game series on Thursday, May 15 at Roadrunner Field. The Roadrunners now have 40 wins on the season, the most wins in a single season in program history.

Rice struck early in the first as they delivered a three-run homer. They then led off the second inning with a solo homer to go up 4-0 over UTSA. Rice then added to their lead in the fourth thanks to another three-run home run to go up 7-0.

In the fifth, Caden Miller broke up the no-hitter as he homered to right field, putting UTSA on the board. Garrett Gruell reached on a throwing error and was then brought to third on back-to-back walks. James Taussig drew a five-pitch walk to give UTSA two runs.

With the bases loaded, Andrew Stucky drew another walk for the Roadrunners’ third run of the inning. Norris McClure was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded to put UTSA down by three.

Drew Detlefsen came up big for UTSA as he delivered a double down the right field line, clearing the bases and tying the game at 7-7.

In the bottom of the sixth, Diego Diaz led off the inning with a walk. Gruell then doubled down the left field line to put UTSA on top 8-7. Gruell was able to reach third on a ground out before scoring on a wild pitch for the Roadrunners’ ninth run of the game. Mason Lytle was walked and then advanced to third on a Taussig single before Stucky drove Lytle in on a sacrifice fly to center field, giving UTSA a 10-7 lead.

Detlefsen led off the seventh with a walk. Miller then advanced Detlefsen to third on a double to right field. Gruell picked up his second RBI of the night on a groundout to the shortstop.

With Miller on third and Jordan Ballin on first. Lytle doubled to left center, scoring Miller and advancing Ballin to third. Taussig was able to drive in both Lytle and Ballin on a fielding error by the shortstop. Stucky then drove in Taussig for his third RBI of the night, putting UTSA up 15-7.

The UTSA bullpen showed up tonight as Sam Simmons, Robert Orloski and Kendall dove threw a combined five innings pitched, allowing just two hits and striking out eight Owls.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- UTSA now has 40 wins, marking the most wins in a single season in program history.
- Ballin had three walks on the night to bring his total to 37, which is now the most walks for a freshman in a single season in program history. The record that Ballin broke has stood since 1992.
- UTSA now has 431 RBIs as a team this year, which is now the program’s best, beating the 2008 team, which had 419.
- With three RBIs on the night, Stucky now has 11 multi-RBI games this season.
- Detlefsen also had three RBIs for his 19th multi-RBI game this season.
- Gruell recorded his fourth two-RBI game this season.
- Miller recorded three hits for the third time in his career, he now has 12 multi-hit games this year.
- Taussig improved his hitting streak to 18 games.
- McClure improved his hitting streak to 17 games.
- Stucky has reached base safely in the past 28 games.
- McClure has reached base safely in the past 21 games.
- Simmons picked up his first Division I win on the mound.
