HOUSTON – The UTSA men’s tennis team (8-10) split the weekend on Sunday by toppling 69th-ranked Rice (12-9) on its home court at George R. Brown Tennis Center. After taking the doubles point, the Roadrunners rolled on in singles to clinch the match on Danijal Muminovic’s court-two victory that set the stage for a 4-3 Roadrunners win.
The teams traded blows in doubles play with Miguel Alonso and Danijal Muminovic landing the first hit on a 6-4 court-three win over Tommy Czaplinski and Kabeer Kapasi. The Owls evened the score on one with a 6-4 outcome, but Tiago Torres and Enzo Vargas secured the initial score on a 6-4 court-two besting of Arthus de la Bassetiere and Eduardo Morais.
Working from the lead position, 106th-ranked Torres extended the advantage with a quick 6-3, 6-0 win over de la Bassetiere on the top flight. Oskar Grzegorzewski followed on two with a 6-3, 6-4 result over Czaplinski. After Rice wins on five and three brought the match to a one-point difference, Muminovic scrapped out a 7-6 (5), 6-4 clincher over Petro Kuzmenok – setting the 4-2 UTSA advantage and locking the ranked win. The Owls notched one more singles point and the final margin landed at 4-3 UTSA advantage.
