BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — UTSA picks up its sixth conference win, defeating UAB 14-4 in eight innings on Friday, Apr. 4 at Young Memorial Field in Birmingham, Ala.

In the first inning, UAB took an early lead, hitting a two-out solo homer to go up 1-0 over the Roadrunners. The lead did not last long as Nathan Hodge would reach on a hit-by-pitch, in the top of the second before being driven in by an opposite-field home run hit by Garrett Gruell to put the Roadrunners up 2-1.
In the third, Andrew Stucky led the inning off with a solo home run for the second homer of the day for the Roadrunners.
The Roadrunners kept rolling in the fourth as Ty Tilson got his third hit of the year to get things started in the fourth. James Taussig then singled to advance Tilson to third. Drew Detlefsen drew a walk to load the bases for UTSA. Stuck’s bat stayed hot as he doubled to right center, clearing the bases and putting the Roadrunners up 6-1.
N. Hodge led the fifth inning off with a single to left field, he then stole second, his second stolen base of the year. After a walk from pinch hitter Norris Mclure put two runners on. A walk from Taussig loaded the bases for UTSA. Mason Lytle then drew a five-pitch walk to put UTSA up 7-1. Detlefsen stepped up to the plate with bases loaded and blasted another opposite-field homer, UTSA’s third of the game, to give the ‘Runners an 11-1 lead.
The Blazers managed to add a run in the fifth on a wild pitch which was an unearned run.
Detlefsen got that run back for the Roadrunners as he picked up his second homer of the day in the seventh inning to put UTSA up 12-2. UAB picked up their third run of the game in the seventh on a throwing error.
In the eighth, Cade Sadler led the inning off with a single; he was then pinch ran for Caden Miller. Diego Diaz singled up the middle, advancing Miller to third. McClure picked up his second hit of the day, scoring Miller and advancing Diaz to third. Diaz was able to score the Roadrunners’ 14th run of the game on a wild pitch.
With the Roadrunners up 14-3, going into the bottom of the eighth, UAB scored their fourth run of the game on a solo homer. The solo home run was not enough to keep the game going, resulting in the game going final at the end of the eighth due to a 10-run rule.
Zach Royse started for the Roadrunners, going 5.1 innings, giving up just one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts. Sam Simmons closed out the game for the Roadrunners, throwing two innings and giving up one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts.

- The homer in the second was Gruells first of the season, he is now the eighth Roadrunner with a homer.
- UTSA had four homers on the night, setting a new season-high in home runs in a game.
