IRVING, Texas – UTSA men’s tennis senior Tiago Torres earned his third career all-conference laurels on Wednesday, as officials from the league office announced the members of the All-American Athletic Conference Team. Torres was among the seven singles players receiving honors after the Roadrunners finished the season 12-11 with an appearance in the AAC Championships Quarterfinal.
The fourth-year senior from Lisbon, Portugal, Torres finished the season ranked No. 100 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national standings, maintaining a constant presence since joining the rankings on March 19. He is the second-highest ranked player in The American at the conclusion of the season. Torres shared the top win count for the Roadrunners in singles and paced the UTSA squad in win percentage with a 12-4 (.750) record – winning his final seven decisions with an 8-2 record across his final 10 outings of the year. All of his appearances were on the top court for the Roadrunners. His final victory of the year came in the AAC Quarterfinal, defeating Florida Atlantic’s 109th-ranked John Bernard, 7-5, 6-4. He is the first all-conference honoree for the Roadrunners under first-year head coach Sasha Gozun and reached as high as No. 96 in the ITA rankings.
“I am extremely proud for Tiago to be chosen as part of this well-deserved honor,” Gozun said. “He is a very valuable player for us and a very successful part of the UTSA tennis program’s history. He left a mark on this program throughout his four years and helped us raise the standard for our program every year. We are very excited to see what new heights he will reach on the professional tour.”
In the fall, Torres went 8-2 in singles while Gozun put him in position to face elite competition while playing the top position. He also shined on the doubles courts with partner Miguel Alonso, going 7-4 and earning a season-high No. 53 doubles ranking. The pair reached the ITA Texas Regional Semifinal by collecting UTSA’s highest-ranked victory on record, downing Texas A&M's third-ranked pair of Togan Tokac and Giulio Perego.
This is Torres’ third career all-conference singles honor, having earned All-Conference USA First Team accolades in 2023 and All-CUSA Second Team Honors in 2022. He finishes his collegiate career with a 47-26 (.644) in-season singles record and 64-36 (.640) singles record combined record. Torres was nationally ranked in singles during three of his four seasons and was ranked in doubles in two seasons. He was also a core component in helping UTSA to its best season since 1985 during the 2023 campaign, generating an 18-7 record, an NCAA-leading 14-match win streak, a Conference USA Runner-up finish, program-first NCAA At-Large selection and a program-record No. 34 national ranking.
