AUSTIN, Texas – In a day segmented and delayed by weather, the UTSA track and field teams opened competition on Thursday inside Mike A. Myers Stadium with the opening day of the Texas Invitational. A pair of prominent UTSA jumpers, Edlin Laur and Mia Lien walked away from the first day of competition with medals in the high jump and long jump.
The opening medal of the meet went to Laur, the Estonian sophomore winning the high jump with a season-best 1.78m (5-10) height. Teammate Madelen Sveinungsen registered a sixth-place finish in the event with a season-high of her own at 1.65m (5-5).
Wrapping up the day after a notable weather delay, Lien earned third place and was second among collegiate performers in the long jump, hitting 6.15m (20-2.25) in her second pass of the finals. The Roadrunners provided a heavy presence in the event’s top 10, with Ida Breigan following in fifth at 6.12m (20-1), Rachela Pace in sixth at 6.09m (19-11.75) and Laur picking up a ninth-place finish of 5.75m (18-10.5).
Registering a new PR and a fifth-place finish in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase, freshman Diego Ramirez came in at 9:38.98. Just moments earlier on the women’s side, senior Brooke Veltman registered a career-best 12:17.37 in the steeple to finish 10th.
In UTSA’s final running event of the night, UTSA crowded the field of the women's 5,000m, collecting four consecutive finishes, as Itzel Rojo was fifth in 19:40.17), Jadyn Gonzales was 6th in 19:44.08), Emma Wallace was seventh in 20:07.50 and Aubry Ybarra was eighth in 20:54.22
The Roadrunners are back in action early on Friday, back at the Texas Invitational. Friday’s action kicks off with the women’s hammer throw at 9:30 a.m., followed by the men’s and the triple jumps begin at 11:30 a.m. The women’s 100m hurdles is the first running event for UTSA at 1:35 p.m. and the meet closes traditionally on the 4x400m relay at 3:40 p.m.
