‘Runners suffer Saturday setback

UTSA fell to Charlotte, 9-5

SAN ANTONIO – On Saturday at Daughtridge Stadium, the UTSA softball team fell to Charlotte, 9-5, in an American Athletic Conference series finale.

The Roadrunners (18-28, 4-17 The American) couldn’t overcome the 49ers (25-24, 13-8 The American), with freshman Reagan Stoudt (1-7) getting tagged with the loss and Aubrey Yarnall (9-9) earning the win.

Five different ‘Runners recorded RBIs on the day, with junior Katia Reyes recording a home run. Sophomore Madison Lenton posted an RBI double, while senior Jaylen Prichard, sophomore Kalee Rochinski, and senior Camryn Robillard rounded out the group who drove in runs.

UTSA picked up a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, with a quartet of full-count walks allowing freshman Skylar Rucker to dent the plate. The 49ers quickly evened things, loading up the bases in the home half and working a base on balls with no outs. Newcomer Sabrina Wick then corralled a line drive and turned a double play to escape the inning without any further damage.

Charlotte used a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 advantage.

The ‘Runners rallied back in the fifth, as Reyes led off the inning with a solo home run. Senior Crislyne Moreno then sliced a single down the right field line, and Prichard walked. A base knock for Rochinski plated Moreno, and Lenton doubled to send sophomore Sydney McReynolds, who entered as a pinch runner, home. A Robillard sac fly pushed Rochinski across, delivering a 5-3 UTSA edge.

The 49ers quickly evened things, taking advantage of a Roadrunner miscue to issue a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the frame, and a three-run sixth grew an 8-5 lead for Charlotte.

UTSA was unable to spark a comeback and now heads back to San Antonio, with midweek contests awaiting against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Tarleton State on Tuesday and Wednesday, ahead of a three-game series with Tulsa on the weekend.
