SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team kick-started an American Athletic Conference series against Charlotte in style as freshman Sabrina Wick hit her first collegiate home run and junior Katia Reyes pitched a complete game for a 5-2 victory on Thursday at Daughtridge Stadium.
The Roadrunners (18-26, 4-15 The American) took down the 49ers (23-24, 11-8 The American), with Reyes (3-2) fanning three in the win, while Brooke Bowling (12-9) got tagged with the loss. Along with Wick, freshman Skylar Rucker and sophomore Taryn Madlock recorded RBIs in the effort.
UTSA started off hot, with Rucker and junior Jaylen Prichard reaching base ahead of a three-run home run by Wick in the top of the first.
The ‘Runners added two more in the fourth, as Madlock blasted a single up the middle, scoring senior Crislyne Moreno, and Rucker knocked in senior Lindsey Davis to deliver a 5-0 lead. Charlotte responded in the home half with a solo home run and a later miscue helping trim their deficit to three.
Looking to spark a rally, the 49ers loaded up the bases with two outs. Reyes persevered, inducing a lazy ground ball to escape the inning unscathed with a 5-2 lead still intact.
The squads will meet at 5 p.m. CT on Friday, ahead of the series finale on Saturday at Daughtridge Stadium.
