UTSA falls to UAB in series opener

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team fell to UAB, 10-3, in American Athletic Conference action on Friday at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners (15-24, 2-14 The American) couldn’t beat the Blazers (18-22, 7-9), with Caitlin Russell (2-3) earning the win and freshman Ava Eldridge (4-6) getting tagged with the loss.

Junior Katia Reyes was the lone ‘Runner with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Along with Reyes, freshman Sabrina Wick, classmate Skylar Rucker and senior Crislyne Moreno recorded base knocks, while junior Madison Hornback picked up an RBI.

UTSA loaded the bases in the bottom of the first on a Wick single, a sophomore Kalee Rochinski walk, and a Reyes base hit. A wild pitch shortly after pushed Wick across for the first run of the ballgame, and Hornback was plunked, scoring Rochinski and delivering a 2-0 lead.

The Blazers answered in the top of the second, tying things up with a home run, a double and a well-placed single. Later, in the fifth, small ball plated another, delivering a 3-2 Blazer lead. Four runs followed for UAB in the sixth and three in the seventh, issuing a 10-2 score line.

Looking to rally with two outs in the bottom of the second, Reyes laced a single down the left field line, and a Moreno double followed, scoring her. With their lead cut to seven, the Blazers found the final out, securing the 10-3 victory.

The two squads will meet again on Saturday for Little League Day, presented by Wendy’s, beginning at 2 p.m., ahead of the finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
