Roadrunners rout Wichita State in Friday night game

WICHITA, Kan. — Roadrunners win game one of the three-game series 9-2 against Wichita State on Friday, Apr. 11, at Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kan. 

THE BASICS:
Score: UTSA 9, Wichita State 2

In the top of the third, UTSA loaded the bases on three straight walks. Norris McClure stepped up to the plate and hit a laser of the left field wall, clearing the bags for the Roadrunners to go up 3-0.

Wichita State was able to notch their first run of the game on an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. The Roadrunners got that run back in the top of the sixth as Caden Miller got on with an infield single. Mason Lytle then singled through the right side, advancing Miller to third. James Taussig drove in Miller on a sacrifice fly to center field to give UTSA a 4-1 lead.

The Shockers got their second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch to cut the UTSA lead to 4-2. Drew Detlefsen led off the top of the seventh with a double down the right-field line. Detlefsen was then brought home on a ground rule double hit by Jordan Ballin putting UTSA up 5-2.

In the top of the ninth, UTSA led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Ballin was then hit by the pitch to load the bases. Ty Hodge picked up his first hit of the day on a double down the right field line to score McClure and Diego Diaz, giving UTSA a 7-2 lead.

With Ballin on third and Hodge on second, Lytle hit a sacrifice fly to center field to put UTSA up by six. Hodge was standing on third when Taussig hit a single up the middle to score Hodge for UTSA’s ninth run of the game.

Zach Royse started for the Roadrunners and threw 5.2 innings, giving up just two runs on five hits. Royse was able to fan three batters on 93 pitches. Robert Orloski came into relief for Royse and threw 3.1 innings, only allowing one walk, which was the first batter he saw retiring the next ten batters he faced.

- UTSA is now 9-8 on the road.
- The Roadrunners are a perfect 8-0 when their opponents score 0-2 runs.
- UTSA is now 14-4 when they make no errors.

- Miller had a two-hit night, his eighth game with two hits.
- Lytle also had a two-hit night for his 18th multi-hit game of the year.
- Taussig drove in two runs, his eighth multi-RBI game of the season.
- McClure had a team-high three hits and three RBIs on the night for his 10th multi-hit game and second multi-RBI game of the season.
- Gruell had two hits in the game for just the second time this year.
- Ballin recorded his eighth two-hit game of the season.
- Hodge had two RBIs tonight, his second two-RBI game of the year.
- Ballin is on a seven-game hitting streak, the longest on the team.
- Lytle has now reached safely in 15 consecutive games.
-Andrew Stucky has now reached base safely in 13 consecutive games.
