Davis homers twice as ‘Runners best Blazers, 13-8

UTSA logged a season-high 15 hits in the victory

SAN ANTONIO – Two home runs by senior Lindsey Davis helped the UTSA softball team recover from a six-run deficit to top UAB, 13-8, in American Athletic Conference action at Roadrunner Field on Saturday. Additionally, with the victory, UTSA has surpassed last year’s win total, with 14 games remaining in the regular season.

The Roadrunners (16-24, 3-14 The American) logged a season-high 15 hits in the victory over the Blazers (18-23, 7-10), as sophomore Meredith Schmitt (5-4) picked up the win and Olivia Cummings (2-4) got the loss.

Davis put together a 3-for-4 afternoon with two RBIs, while junior Madison Hornback joined her in recording her first home run of the season. Classmate Katia Reyes drove in three off a pair of hits, with senior Camryn Robillard, freshman Skylar Rucker, and senior Crislyne Moreno all logging multiple hits.

UAB jumped out to a one-run lead in the top of the first, and UTSA answered at the bottom of the second, as Davis singled, swiped second, and came around to score on a Robillard sacrifice.

Multiple miscues in the top of the third pushed six across for the Blazers, building a 7-1 edge.

Rucker logged a base hit, and Rochinski was plunked to start the home half. From there, Reyes singled, knocking in Rucker, and Rochinski dented home on a Moreno double. Hornback then launched a two-run home run, knotting the contest 7-7.

UAB scored one in the fourth to regain the lead, but a Davis home run tied things up in the bottom of the fifth. A two-out rally followed, with sophomore Taryn Madlock and Rucker logging back-to-back singles ahead of a Rochinski hit, a Reyes double, and a Moreno single that built a 12-8 advantage.

Davis launched her second home run of the day in the sixth for a 13-8 lead that UAB was unable to recover from.

UTSA will eye a series victory on Sunday at 1 p.m., with the squad celebrating Alumni Day.
