Six-run inning propels UTSA to its first AAC win of the year

CHARLOTTE, N.C.— UTSA earns its first American Athletic Conference game of the year on a 10-3 victory over Charlotte on Saturday, Mar. 22 at Hayes Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.

The Roadrunner jumped out to an early lead by plating three runs in the top of the first. It all started with a lead-off double hit by Mason Lytle, who jumped on the game's first pitch. A pitch hit Drew Detlefsen to put two runners on. The Roadrunners’ clean-up hitter, Caden Miller, then mashed a ball hitting the wall in right field, scoring Lytle.

With runners on second and third, Ty Hodge hit an infield single bouncing off a diving third baseman's glove, allowing Detlefsen to score. With runners on first and third, Andrew Stucky singled to left center, plating Miller and giving the Roadrunners a three-run lead.

T. Hodge led the third off with a single to left field. Stucky stepped up to bat and hit a towering home run to left field to score two runs. The Roadrunners were able to load the bases on a walk, a muffed throw and a single hit by Lytle. Detlefsen got ahold of one, launching a ball over the left-field fence to score four runs. The Roadrunners put six runs on the board in the third to have a 9-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Charlotte added two runs on a home run to left field with a runner on first.

After a scoreless four innings, Lyte was able to get his second double of the day, leading to an RBI single hit by Garrett Gruell to give the Roadrunners 10 runs. Charlotte scored one more run in the bottom of the ninth on a ground out.

Starting pitcher Braylon Owens had a career night as he logged 8.0 innings pitched, with seven strikeouts and one walk on 107 pitches thrown. Kendall Dove threw the bottom of the ninth, giving up one run.

- Lytle is now on a team-high five-game hitting streak, with his longest hitting streak being seven games.
- Owens’ eight innings is a team high on the year.
