Madrid homers as ‘Runners fall to Shockers

SAN ANTONIO – Despite redshirt freshman Makayla Madrid homering for the second time in as many games, the UTSA softball team suffered a 13-5 run-rule defeat at the hands of Wichita State in American Athletic Conference action on Sunday at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners (14-16, 2-7 The American) couldn’t overcome the Shockers (15-15, 4-5 The American), with freshman Ava Eldridge (4-3) getting tagged with the loss and Ryley Nihart (3-3) going the distance for the win.

Madrid drove in a team-high three runs across the contest while junior Katia Reyes pushed across two. Senior Jaylen Prichard was also solid at the plate, scoring 2-for-2 with a walk and a pair of runs.

WSU jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the top of the first, but UTSA answered as Madrid launched a two-run bomb over the wall in center field to pull the ‘Runners within three.

The Shockers added two in the second and four in the third to take an 11-2 lead. UTSA then loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, as freshman Sabrina Wick and Prichard singled, while newcomer Skylar Rucker was plunked. Madrid was hit by a pitch to plate Wick, and Reyes smashed a base hit off the outfield wall to issue an 11-5 score line.

WSU added two more in the fifth, and UTSA could not spark a rally in the home half as the opposition secured the 13-5 run-rule win.

UTSA will remain at home, next hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday at 4 p.m., ahead of a Wednesday night Battle of I-35 against Texas State in San Marcos, Texas.
