UTSA to square off with NAU, UNM in the Land of Enchantment

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s tennis team (5-8) will finish off the current road swing this weekend in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with matches on Saturday against Northern Arizona (11-7) and then Sunday against the host, No. 67 New Mexico (8-5) – both matches to be played at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium

Following the Action
As a neutral-site match, Saturday’s meeting with Northern Arizona will not have any live coverage, with first serve set for 1 p.m. CDT. On Sunday, the Roadrunners will face the hosting Lobos with live results and live video available for the match at 12 p.m. CDT.

About the Roadrunners
The Roadrunners have split their last four outings in the first season under Sasha Gozun and are 5-8 heading into the weekend our west. After handily winning across town at UIW by a 6-1 margin, UTSA suffered a sweep in Dallas at SMU last Wednesday. Topping the win count most of the season, senior Danijal Muminovic is 6-3 on the second court, while newcomer Oskar Grzegorzewski and 96th-ranked senior Tiago Torres are both 5-3 on the third and first courts, respectively. Miguel Alonso and Torres, Grzegorzewski and Ben Chetewy Ungar, and Muminovic with Enzo Vargas each have three wins for the Roadrunners.

About the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks
The Lumberjacks enter the weekend at 11-7 in the fourth year under Maciej Bogusz, seeing a five-match win streak snapped on Friday by New Mexico, 6-1. NAU finished last season at 17-7. Topping NAU in wins, four Lumberjacks have collected nine singles wins; Jakub Prachar (9-5) Piotr Galus (9-4), Takumi Katsuda (9-4) and Dani Torres (9-4). Meanwhile, in doubles action, Torres and Galus lead with a 5-1 record, while Katsuda and Ivan Perisic are 4-1, while Prachar and Torres are 4-0 together.

These team’s last met on Feb. 20, 2011, in Las Cruces, N.M., with UTSA dealing out a 7-0 sweep. UTSA is 3-0 in the series and 2-0 in neutral matches, dating back to 2003.

About the New Mexico Lobos
The 67th-ranked Lobos come into the weekend at 8-5 overall in the first season under Rob Bareford, following up a 14-10 campaign last year. After topping NAU on Friday, the Lobos are riding a four-match win streak into Sunday afternoon, winning three of the four by a 6-1 margin – topping Wichita State 5-2 at home. Aram Noroozian tops the squad with seven wins, while Daniil Kakhniuk has six. In doubles play, the tandem of Noroozian and Georgio Samaha have notched nine wins together and are also ranked 67th.

Playing three times in Albuquerque with an 0-3 series record, UTSA is 0-4 all-time against the Lobos, last meeting Feb. 17 last season in Wichita with a with a 5-2 loss to UNM.

UTSA will close up the month at home for the first time since Feb. 23, hosting Abilene Christian on March 29 at the UTSA Tennis Center. UTSA will open April with back-to-back matches against Charlotte and Rice in Houston, April 5-6.
