SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team successfully concluded the Birds Up Bash, taking down Le Moyne 5-2 in the tournament consolation contest at Roadrunner Field on Sunday.
The Roadrunners (12-7) topped the Dolphins (2-13) as redshirt freshman Madison Collins (1-3) earned the first victory of her collegiate career, while newcomer Ava Eldridge picked up a save (2). For Le Moyne, Isabella Kwashek (1-4) got tagged with the loss.
Freshman Skylar Rucker drove in two for the squad, as sophomore Kalee Rochinski and senior Jaylen Prichard joined her with RBIs.
UTSA struck first, as Rucker belted a double, before scoring on a two-bagger by Rochinski that handed the squad a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first.
Senior Lindsey Davis was walked to open the third, and freshman Sabrina Wick reached base on a Dolphin miscue that put a pair on. An RBI groundout for Rucker followed, and Rochinski was plunked, sending up Prichard, who plated Wick on a sharply hit single into left.
The ‘Runners added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth, as a wild pitch scored sophomore Sydney McReynolds, and Davis dented home off a sac-fly by Rucker, issuing a 5-0 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, Le Moyne sparked a rally scoring one to pull within four. Eldridge was then called out of the pen with runners on the corners and one out. A sac fly followed to score a run, but another Dolphin was gunned down after tagging late to cement the 5-2 UTSA victory.
The Roadrunners will now open conference play as they host East Carolina in a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. inside Roadrunner Field.
