MEMPHIS – The UTSA softball team dropped a back-and-forth battle against Memphis on Sunday, falling 9-8 at the Tiger Softball Complex.
The Roadrunners (13-13, 1-5 The American) fell to the Tigers (14-15, 3-3 The American), with freshman Reagan Stoudt (0-3) getting the loss and Jericho Tate (2-3) the win.
Sophomore Kalee Rochinski and senior Lindsey Davis each logged two RBIs, while junior Katia Reyes knocked in three via a home run.
UTSA got on the board quickly, with freshman Skylar Rucker singling, swiping second, and then coming around to score on an RBI groundout by classmate Sabrina Wick in the top of the first.
Memphis replied in the second, plating three to snag the lead. Not to be deterred, UTSA answered right back in the top of the third, with senior Jaylen Prichard lacing a leadoff double and Wick following up with a single. Rochinski then stepped up and scored the pair to work a 3-3 tie.
The Tigers found a run in the bottom of the third to go up 4-3, but Reyes delivered a three-run bomb in the top of the fifth that issued a 6-4 score line.
The back-and-forth battle continued, as Memphis scored three in the bottom of the fifth to regain a 7-6 edge.
Sophomore Caton Letbetter singled to open the sixth, and two outs followed. Wick reached on an error to extend the inning, and Rochinski walked, loading up the bases for Davis, who slapped a single up the middle, knocking in the duo. Memphis then posted a crooked number in the home half, taking a 9-8 lead into the seventh.
Reyes was issued a free pass, and a base hit for senior Crislyne Moreno put a pair on in the final frame. A sac-bunt advanced the pair into scoring position, ahead of a fielder’s choice that saw runners at the corners. Prichard was walked, juicing the bases, but Memphis managed the final out to secure the 9-8 victory.
