UTSA splits matches at Diablos College Invite

TEMPE, Ariz. – The UTSA men’s tennis team (4-6) opened action on Friday at the seven-team Diablos College Invitational, hosted by Arizona State at the Kiwanis Tennis Center. In the opening round, the Roadrunners fell to Boise State (8-3) but bounced back in the consolation bracket with a 4-1 win over Utah State (6-5). UTSA is slated to face Liberty on the second day at the tournament.

Match 1 vs. Boise State
The Roadrunners couldn’t quite get on track against the Broncos, as Boise State claimed the doubles point with wins on court one and two, then swept UTSA while working through singles courts four, five and then clinching the 4-0 finish on two.

Match 2 vs. Utah State
Pushed right back into action just 90 minutes after finishing the opening round, the Roadrunners responded quickly against Utah State, chalking up the doubles point. On three, Miguel Alonso and Santiago Flyckt put the Roadrunners on the board with a 6-0 defeat of Eemil Pasanen and Keanu Rigby. On the top court, Oskar Grzegorzewski and Enzo Vargas topped David Martirosian and Eliot Nobel with a doubles-clinching 6-4 victory.

In singles action, the Aggies took one back on court four to even things up, but Grzegorzewski bested Dimitri Goubin on court three to put UTSA back ahead for good, going 6-2, 6-1. Flyckt followed on five with a 6-2, 6-4 besting of Pasanen, then Jakub Wlodarczyk clinched the match on court six with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Keanu Rigby – snapping UTSA’s losing skid.
