WICHITA, Kan.—Sophomore Idara Udo picked up her second double-double in as many games as her 14 points and 12 rebounds propelled the UTSA women's basketball team past Wichita State, 60-49 in American Athletic Conference action at Koch Arena on Saturday.
The Roadrunners (20-3, 10-1 The American) bested the Shockers (8-17, 2-10 The American) as redshirt senior Jordyn Jenkins joined Udo in charting double-digit points with 11. Graduate student Nina De Leon Negron performed well with nine points, six rebounds, and four assists, while junior Sidney Love posted eight points with five boards.
UTSA won the rebound battle, securing 51 to WSU's 33, and the 'Runners logged nine more second-chance points and seven more off the bench.
Junior Maya Linton kick-started the first with a three-pointer, and the Shockers matched to tie things up. Udo knocked down a pair from the charity stripe and Jenkins a jumper for a 7-3 lead. WSU scored the subsequent seven points to work a 10-7 edge midway through the frame. Lucio halted the run with a couple of free throws, and Jenkins followed with two more. The squads exchanged blows until a Shocker bucket saw a 17-14 advantage at the period's conclusion.
WSU used a 6-0 run in the second for a 23-14 lead before Udo connected for UTSA's first basket of the stanza, and freshman Damara Allen hit from beyond the arc to pull within four. The Shockers kept the Roadrunners at arms-length for the remainder of the half as they headed into the locker room up, 27-23.
A triple for WSU saw a 34-27 score line in the third, but a 6-2 spurt featuring points by Udo, De Leon Negron and junior Cheyenne Rowe kept the squad within three. Shortly after, De Leon Negron banged home a trey for a 38-38 tie, ahead of two Shocker free throws that issued a 40-38 edge entering the fourth.
Udo knotted things with a pair from the charity stripe in the final fame, and De Leon Negron found Jenkins on an alley-oop for a 42-40 UTSA lead. WSU converted a triple, and sophomore Aysia Proctor replied with a trey of her own to keep the 'Runners in front. Her bucket sparked a 9-2 run with back-to-back Love layups leading to a 51-45 edge. Lockdown defense and clutch free throws followed as UTSA cruised to the 60-49 win.
The 'Runners will return to the Convocation Center, where they'll host East Carolina on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
