UTSA meets Denver and Oregon this weekend in Eugene

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s tennis team (2-1) is traveling to the Great Northwest for a pair of matches against programs in last year’s national Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, meeting Denver at 2 p.m. CST on Saturday, Feb. 8, and the host, Oregon at 12 p.m. CST on Sunday, Feb. 9, at UO’s Student Tennis Center.

Keeping up with the action
Oregon Athletics will not have live results or streaming for the neutral UTSA vs. Denver match on Saturday. On Sunday against the Ducks, follow live results or watch the action live through Oregon’s Playsight.

About the Roadrunners
The Roadrunners have won two straight matches to open up 2025 at 2-1 after falling to 14th-ranked Texas A&M in the opener. UTSA handily defeated UT Rio Grande Valley but had to work for it at UT Arlington – the Mavericks bringing it all down to a Tiago Torres 4-3 clinch on court one. Week one American Athletic Conference Player of the Week Danijal Muminovic and newcomer Oskar Grzegorzewski pace the Roadrunners in singles, both holding a 2-1 start to the year. The court three doubles pair of Muminovic and Enzo Vargas are up 2-0 right now, while the first-court tandem of Torres and Miguel Alonso are 1-0 and just rose in the national rankings to 53rd this week.

About the Denver Pioneers
Denver wrapped last season at 23-1, falling to 22nd-ranked Michigan State in the opening round of the NCAA tournament for their lone setback – ending the campaign ranked 44th. This season, the Pioneers have seemingly picked right up where they left off, boasting a 6-1 start, with the one loss coming in a neutral sweep from Princeton. Ranked at No. 38 in singles play, Daniel Sancho Arbizu is 6-0 right now, while 69th-ranked Raffaello Papajcik finds himself 3-3. Samuel Rovai and Connor Robb-Wilcox have both locked up 6-1 records in the early going. With 10 players on the roster, the Pioneers have already utilized 18 different doubles combinations, topped by Sancho Abizu and Theo Coats at 6-1, while Rovai and Rikuto Yamaguchi have gone 4-0 together. The Pioneers face Oregon on Friday.

This is the fifth meeting since 2013 between these teams and the Pioneers hold a 3-1 advantage, but all in Denver. The lone match away, in San Antonio in 2023, amounted to a 5-2 Roadrunner victory. Last season, Denver flipped the score for a win on their home courts.

About the Oregon Ducks
Finishing last season at 15-13 and ranked No. 50, the Oregon Ducks have started this year at 3-2 with all three wins coming at home at the Student Tennis Center. Also sporting a 10-man roster, there have been a lot of different lineup combinations, led by a 3-0 start for Matthew Burton, while Clement Lemire and Paris Pouatcha are both 3-1. The doubles teams have seen only six variations, the strongest of the group being Lemire and Pouatcha with a 3-1 record on two, while Lenn Luemkemann has gone 2-0 with Burton on one.

A heated match last year at the UTSA Tennis Center was the Roadrunners’ lone series win in five attempts, taking a 4-0 victory over the visiting Ducks to close out January. UTSA played two matches the last trip to Eugene, suffering sweeps in both.

Up Next
The Roadrunners will see a three-match homestand that spans nine days, welcoming Texas Tech to the UTSA Tennis Center on Feb. 14, Florida Atlantic on Feb. 21 and Wichita State on Feb. 23.
