Roadrunners rout Oakland 13-3

SAN ANTONIO— UTSA Baseball caps off its seventh win of the season and sixth straight win in its 13-3 victory over Oakland on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.

THE BASICS:

The Roadrunners jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Mason Lytle, batting leadoff, opened the inning with a double down the right-field line. Ty Hodge followed that up with a double of his own scoring Lytle to put the first run on the board. T. Hodge was advanced to third on a ground out. Andrew Stucky hit a towering fly ball to right field allowing T. Hodge to tag up and score.

With Cade Sadler making his debut for the Roadrunners, he reached first after getting hit by the pitch to lead off the second inning. A walk by Ty Tilson put two Roadrunners on. Lytle came up to bat and doubled to right center scoring both Sadler and Tilson.

In the fourth, Nate Hodge led off the inning with a double. Sadler got his first hit as a Roadrunner that scored N. Hodge. Lytle found himself on-base on a fielder’s choice. T. Hodge then advanced Lytle to second on a single through the left side. Drew Detlefsen stepped in the box and delivered a single scoring Lytle for the Roadrunners’ second run of the inning.

With T. Hodge on third and Detlefsen on first, Stucky singled to left field giving way for T. Hodge to score, putting the Roadrunners up 7-0.

Whitt Joyce led off the fifth inning by getting hit by the pitch. N. Hodge then earned his second hit of the day to advance Joyce to second. A flyout by Sadler advanced Joyce to third. With runners on first and third, Tilson grounded out to the pitcher allowing Joyce to score and N. Hodge to advance to second. Lytle singled to score N. Hodge to give the Roadrunners a nine-run lead.

Starting pitcher Gunnar Brown came out of the game tossing five innings, striking out seven batters and only allowing two hits. Kendall Dove was the next pitcher called on at the start of the sixth.

Oakland scored its first run of the game in the sixth on a solo home run. The Roadrunners answered that one run in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly hit by Joyce to score Stucky who reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to third on a Caden Miller single.

Oakland added two more runs in the seventh on a two-run home run.

Tilson managed to reach on a fielder’s choice in the seventh, he then stole second with Lytle at the plate. Lytle flied out to right field allowing Tilson to advance to third. Freshman Jordan Ballin singled to left field, scoring Tilson for the Roadrunners’ eleventh run of the game.

With one out remaining for the Roadrunners, Detlefsen doubled to right center to score a speedy Ballin who was standing on first. James Taussig was called on to pinch hit for Stucky and he delivered a single to left field on the first pitch he saw to score Detlefsen to end the ballgame in seven innings on a run rule.

- The Roadrunners set a new season high in doubles with six in tonight’s outing.
- UTSA had 13 RBIs to tie its season high set against Long Island on Feb. 22.  
- Lytle had three hits in five at-bats with three RBIs for his seventh multi-hit game and fourth multi-RBI game of the season.
- Detlefsen had two RBIs for his fourth multi-RBI game.
- Stucky also had two RBIs to earn his third multi-RBI game.
- N. Hodge got his second multi-hit game of the season on a 2-for-4 day.
