SAN ANTONIO – With their backs against the wall in the bottom of the seventh, the UTSA softball team found a way, loading up the bases before a two-out single by freshman Sabrina Wick drove in a pair for a 3-2 victory over St. Thomas on Saturday at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners (9-3) bested the Tommies (5-6) as a part of the Roadrunner Classic, with newcomer Kaylie Olivarez (3-1) securing the win and Ella Crook (2-5) getting tagged with the loss.
Olivarez took over for junior Katia Reyes in the fifth, twirling 2.2 innings with three strikeouts and two hits allowed. Reyes, meanwhile, scattered three hits and fanned one over the first 4.1 innings.
At the plate, Wick led the way, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Senior Camryn Robillard, sophomore Kalee Rochinski, and freshman Skylar Rucker also recorded hits on the afternoon.
UTSA wasted no time getting on the board as back-to-back hits by Wick and Rucker opened the bottom of the first. A fielder's choice followed, ahead of a double steal and a St. Thomas miscue that allowed Rucker to dent home and take a 1-0 lead.
A solo shot in the fourth and another long ball in the fifth handed the Tommies a slim 2-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh, a St. Thomas miscue allowed Reyes to reach safely, and Rochinski sliced a base knock through the right side to put two on with one out. A strikeout followed, and senior Lindsey Davis was plunked juicing the bases with one out. From there, Wick put her barrel on the ball, with a single up the middle allowing Rochinski and Reyes to score and cement the 3-2, walk-off victory.
UTSA will wrap up the Roadrunner Classic on Sunday as they are set to face Sam Houston at 2 p.m.
