SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s tennis team (3-3) battled to the very end in a 4-3 setback against visiting Texas Tech (5-3) on Saturday – after beginning the multi-delayed match early Friday afternoon. It all came down to a third-set finish on the fourth court.
The Red Raiders went up early on Friday afternoon before drizzle and multiple rain delays forced an end to action for the day with just one finished court in singles play. Texas Tech pulled out doubles wins on courts two and three to take the early point.
Before the curtain was pulled on Friday’s action, second-court senior Danijal Muminovic had already evened things up, making quick two-set work of Tyler Stewart, 6-1, 6-4. At the time of the break for the day, three of the remaining courts were split, one saw UTSA up and another with TTU leading.
After more delays set the start back from morning to afternoon, TTU built up a quick lead with fifth and sixth-court wins, but the Roadrunners were hardly ready to fold. On court three, Oskar Grzegorzewski bounced back from split sets to finish off Niksa Arsic and bring the match to a single point with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 win. On one, Tiago Torres rallied from a first-set loss to force three and defeat Piotr Pawlak, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
It all came down to a fourth-court, third-set finish as Ben Chetewy Ungar pulled ahead of Ludovico Vaccari late, but Vaccari secured the final three points for the set and match clinch with a 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 win.
