SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s tennis team (1-1) battled through a tough doubles point and then came out swinging in singles to claim a decisive 4-0 victory over visiting UT Rio Grande Valley (0-3) on Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center, earning the first win of the Sasha Gozun era.
The Vaqueros didn’t make things easy to open up, squeezing the Roadrunners in a tough doubles round. However, Oskar Grzegorzewski and Ben Chetewy Ungar got the Roadrunners on track with a 6-3 besting of Isaac Smyth and Sam Whitehead on the second court. Pushed to a 7-5 victory, Danijal Muminovic and Enzo Vargas downed Paolo Bonaguro and Will Roberts on court three to earn UTSA the initial point.
In singles play, Muminovic made quick work of Ivo Isqueiro for the solo first win of the day, going 6-1, 6-4 past his opponent on two. Santiago Flyckt followed on six with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Bonaguro. Rounding out the solid 4-0 win, Oskar Grzegorzewski notched his second win of the year on a 6-4, 6-1 win over Roberts to seal the match on court three.
Hearing From Head Coach Sasha Gozun:
“It was a good feeling to win at home. After a slower start, the boys were able to bounce back and solidify themselves on a lot of courts. It’s just the beginning of our season, and there are a lot of matches to go. I like what I saw out there today.”
