HOUSTON – All three of UTSA men’s tennis’ performers were in action on Friday in their respective quarterfinals at the American Athletic Conference Individual Championships at Rice’s George R. Brown Tennis Center. However, it was senior Danijal Muminovic who emerged on top, moving on to Saturday’s singles semifinal.
The day opened with the doubles tandem of Tiago Torres (Senior/Lisbon, Portugal) and Miguel Alonso (Senior/Veracruz, Mexico), taking second-seeded Arthus de la Bassetiere and Kabeer Kapasi from Rice – the nation’s 57th-ranked doubles. Battling down the line against an early deficit, the Roadrunners fell to elimination with an 8-1 loss.
In singles play, Torres went head-to-head with Tulane’s Luka Petrovic and lost in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. However, the Roadrunners moved one player ahead as Muminovic (Senior/Tulza, Bosnia) defeated Florida Atlantic’s John Bernard, the eight seed, handily at 6-2, 6-3. To reach the round, Muminovic downed top-seeded Pablo Alemany from Memphis – the 27th-ranked player in the nation. On Saturday in the semifinal, Muminovic will meet fifth-seeded Timothy Carlsson Seger from Tulsa at 12 p.m.
