PHILADELPHIA – The UTSA Volleyball team suffered a 25-15, 25-22, 25-20 setback at the hands of Temple on Friday in American Athletic Conference action at McGonigle Hall.
The Roadrunners (7-15, 1-8 The American) fell to the Owls (10-12, 3-6 The American), as sophomore Peyton Turner paced the match with 12 digs, while junior Caroline Krueger worked 10. Krueger tied with junior Mia Soerensen for the team lead with seven kills. Additionally, freshman Morgen Durgens dished out 19 assists, and sophomore Annika Sokol managed 11.
The Owls snapped a 7-7 deadlock with a five-point swing in the first, building a 15-9 advantage midway through the frame. Temple never looked back, cruising to a 25-15 win.
UTSA scored the first four in the second stanza, with the run featuring kills by Soerensen and freshman Isabella Arroyave, as well as an ace for Krueger. The Owls battled back to within one, ahead of back-to-back aces for Krueger that saw a 13-9 UTSA lead. Shortly after, Temple recorded seven unanswered points to snag a 17-15 lead. A senior Faye Wilbricht kill and an Owl error saw an 18-18 tie before Temple surged for a 25-22 victory.
Neither squad could break away in a tightly contested third set until a three-point surge resulted in a 21-17 Owl edge. Temple then polished off the match, using a 25-20 win to secure the sweep.
UTSA will be back in action on Sunday as they host South Florida in a Rowdy Rodeo-themed contest at 1 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
