WACO, Texas. – The UTSA men’s tennis doubles pair of seniors Tiago Torres and Miguel Alonso, concluded their run through the doubles bracket at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Texas Regional Championships, reaching the semifinal after knocking out a huge ranked win. It’s the third consecutive year that the Roadrunners have notched a pair in the semis at the Regional Championships.
Torres (Lisbon, Portugal) and Alonso (Veracruz, Mexico) opened in the Round of 32 with an 8-3 victory over UT Arlington’s Yazid Lahjomri and Pedro Sasso. After turning in an 8-4 win over Filip Apltauer and Ka Quirijns, they Roadrunners go their quarterfinal shot at the No. 3 doubles pair from Texas A&M, Togan Tokac and Giulio Perego – delivering an 8-6 victory to move on to the semis. In the next round, Torres and Alonso battled, but dropped a 6-4, 6-1 result to Texas’ Timo Legout and Lucas Brown.
Also collecting wins at the ITA Regional in doubles, Santiago Flyckt and Luke Cantu topped Prairie View A&M’s Ashton Bunch and Eduardo Nunez Del Prado Flores, 8-4, before falling in the Round of 32.
In singles competition, Torres broke a split match for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over SMU’s Xavier Calvelo, then downing Baylor’s Louis Bowden in Round of 32, 6-3, 6-2. In the Round of 16, Torres, fell to Texas A&M’s JC Roddick, 6-3, 6-3. Danijal Muminovic earned an-opening round victory over Texas A&M’s Matthis Ross, 6-4, 7-6 [9], but fell to SMU’s Trevor Svajda in the following round, 6-2, 6-3.
