Almaguer, Hyde round out 2024-25 women's basketball coaching staff

Almaguer joins the squad as an assistant coach, while Hyde represents the program's newest graduate assistant

SAN ANTONIO – On Monday, UTSA women's basketball coach Karen Aston announced a pair of new additions to the coaching staff in, Angel Almaguer and Christian Hyde, ahead of the 2024-25 season. Almaguer has been elevated to assistant coach, while Hyde takes over as the team's graduate assistant.

"We are pleased to be able to elevate Angel from our GA position to an assistant coach position," said Aston. "He has worked tirelessly the last two years and has proven that he has a strong desire to help our program improve. Angel is a perfect example of taking opportunity and making the most of it, and he is being rewarded for his commitment to UTSA Basketball. We will all look forward to watching him grow as a coach."

No stranger to UTSA, Almaguer has rapidly risen through the ranks, initially serving as a practice player for the 2021-22 season before roles as a student manager in 2022-23 and as a graduate assistant in 2023-24. He's helped the program reach new heights, as the 'Runners went 18-15 last season, collecting the program's most wins and the first national postseason berth since the 2008-09 campaign. The Roadrunners also picked up their inaugural postseason victory via an 80-62 routing of Northern Colorado in the Opening Round of the WNIT. Additionally, Almaguer graduated with a bachelor of kinesiology in exercise physiology in May of 2022 and recently received his master's degree from the university.

"We are also excited to welcome Chris to our program as a Graduate Assistant. He has a wonderful disposition and will be a great addition. I also love that Chris comes from a basketball background and has a passion for the sport and helping others. He is excited to get to work on his masters, but I hope he gains some valuable experience on the court and off."

Hyde, meanwhile, heads across town from nearby UIW, where he was a student coaching assistant from 2021-2024 with the Cardinals women's basketball team and a sports operation assistant with the university intramural department. With highlights including a 2021-22 Southland Conference title, Hyde handled a wealth of responsibilities, including film reports, scouting opponents, and creating individualized workouts for student-athletes. A regular on the dean's list at UIW, Hyde graduated in May of 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in computer information systems with a concentration in networking and a minor in cyber security systems. At UTSA, he will pursue a master's degree in information technology, specializing in cyber defense.

The two round out a 2024-25 women's basketball staff that includes Jamie Carey as Associate Head Coach, Cameron Miles as Assistant Coach / Coordinator of Scouting, Chantel Govan as Assistant Coach / Recruiting Coordinator, Sophia Ramos as Assistant Coach, and Elyssa Coleman as Director of Operations.
