Men’s Tennis opens fall competition in Waco and Corpus Christi

SAN ANTONIO – Taking on the first action under first-year head coach Sasha Gozun, the UTSA men’s tennis team will split the squad and compete in two tournaments this weekend to kick off the 2024 fall campaign. The Roadrunners will be competing in Corpus Christi at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open and also in Waco at Baylor’s Waco Fall Kickoff Classic.

Gozun was hired as the program’s sixth head coach in mid-August after successful assistant/associate head coach stints at Furman and Campbell. Gozun was a powerhouse player in The American for South Florida during his playing days, including a 2017 AAC Player of the Year honor.

Featuring a roster of seven in Gozun’s first year with the Roadrunners, UTSA will see most of their newest players take on the field at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as redshirt freshman Santiago Flyckt and first-year UTSA players Sergei Haug and Luke Cantu will begin their Fall competitions on Friday for the three-day tournament. The tournament will run all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday with play beginning at 9 a.m. each day at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

Heading to Waco for Baylor’s tournament that spans the weekend, returning players Miguel Alonso, Danijal Muminovic and Tiago Torres will be joined by Oskar Grzegorewski in competition at the Waco Regional Tennis Courts. The tournament will run from Friday through Sunday.

Alonso led all singles payers last year with a 12-3 final record. Meanwhile, Torres finished 10-7 and enters the Fall with a No. 120 ITA national singles ranking. Muminovic was also 9-8 last spring.

Next week will be a big one for the Roadrunners and all across the nation with ITA All-Americans on the schedule. Select players from UTSA will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the tournament running from Sept. 21-29.
