Aston inks Mississippi State transfer, Gony

She becomes the sixth member of a signing class that includes Emilia Dannebauer, Nina De Leon Negron, Mia Hammonds, Taylor Ross, and Damara Allen

SAN ANTONIO — On Friday, head UTSA women’s basketball coach Karen Aston officially announced the signing of 6-4 Mississippi State transfer Nyayongah Gony to the 2024-25 squad.

Nyayongah Gony | 6-4 | F | Lincoln, Neb. | Lincoln HS | Miami (Fla.) | Mississippi State

Gony comes to UTSA as a redshirt senior following an illustrious prep career at Lincoln HS and stints at Miami (Fla.) and Mississippi State. As a redshirt junior, she made 19 appearances and two starts with the Bulldogs after seeing action in eight contests as a redshirt sophomore. She delivered a standout performance against her former squad, collecting 10 rebounds with seven points and three blocks across a contest with the Hurricanes. Gony was also named the 2023-24 “Dawg” of the offseason due to her work ethic on the court and in the weight room at Mississippi State.

She redshirted across the 2021-22 campaign before transferring, and at Miami, she spent her freshman season competing in all 22 games.

Gony led the Canes with a 32.7% shooting clip from beyond the arc, connecting from distance in 11-of-22 games. As the only freshman to see action in the 2020-21 season, she scored 78 points for the squad.

In high school, she was a highly touted prospect, ranking as the top recruit in the state of Nebraska and receiving a four-star rating from both espnW HoopGurlz and ProspectsNation.com. espnW HoopGurlz slotted her 56th in the class of 2022, while ASGR Basketball had her 81st and ProspectsNation.com 124th. At her position, she climbed as high as 13th on the espnW Hoop Gurlz leader board and was a multi-time Nebraska Class A All-State selection.

Gony is the daughter of John Wigual Ruach and Elizabeth Riek. She has one sister, Nyagoa, who has spent time on the South Sudan National Team and played collegiately for UC Irvine and Purdue.

She becomes the sixth signee of the 2024-25 recruiting class, joining Emilia Dannebauer, Nia De Leon Negron, Mia Hammonds, Taylor Ross, and Damara Allen.

Head Coach Karen Aston on Gony:

“I am incredibly excited to welcome Nya to our Roadrunner Family. She is a perfect fit for our style of play, and her ability to stretch the floor will help unlock our offense. She brings with her experience from the highest level of collegiate basketball and we can’t wait to see what she can do here in San Antonio!”
