UTSA falls in series opener at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The UTSA baseball team dropped the series opener to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-2, on Friday night at Chapman Field in Corpus Christi, Texas.

 

QUICK HITS

·      Catcher Broc Parmer led the team with a 2-for-4 showing with one run, one RBI and a home run – his third of the season.

·      Ruger Riojas kept the Islanders scoreless through the final 2.1 innings.

·      UTSA fell to an even 7-7 record, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi improved to an even 8-8 record.

·      The Roadrunners still hold a 43-27 advantage in the all-time series record against the Islanders, despite losing the last two meetings.

 

BREAKDOWN OF THE GAME

The first three innings went scoreless as the Roadrunners and Islanders mirrored each other. In the first frame, both teams recorded a hit. UTSA and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had two hits apiece in the second frame but were unable to do anything with the opportunity. In the third inning, both teams got two runners on base but didn’t get further than that.

 

In the fourth inning, the Islander opened up scoring as a sacrifice fly gave Texas A&M-Corpus Christi a 1-0 lead. The fifth frame saw a couple more zeros added to the scoreboard.

 

The Roadrunners put a number on the board as a solo home run by Parmer tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth. It didn’t take long for the Islanders to regain the lead as two singles brought in three runs to give Texas A&M-Corpus Christi a 4-1 advantage.

 

In the top of the seventh, UTSA loaded the bases on a hit by pitch and two walks. Later in the inning, Zane Spinn came in to score on a wild pitch, cutting the Roadrunners’ deficit to 4-2. The Islanders had runners on the corners in the bottom of the frame, but Riojas got out of the jam.

 

The Roadrunners continued the momentum in the eighth with runners on first and second but were unable to get home. Riojas used eight pitches in the bottom of the frame to sit the A&M-Corpus Christi’s batters with two groundouts and strikeout.

 

Again, UTSA found a couple of baserunners on the path in the top of the ninth but didn’t get them across the plate as the Roadrunners fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by 4-2.
