SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s tennis team (7-8) couldn’t get back on track after a necessary venue switch broke up Friday’s action against Pacific (9-1). Indian Wells wasn’t the only tennis venue to run into insect trouble this week – with the doubles under way and the Roadrunners up, a hiveless colony of bees created challenges to continue the match on campus. After relocating to courts in Shavano Park, the Tigers took control after pulling ahead on the doubles point, wrapping the match in a 5-2 win.
Miguel Alonso and Alan Magadan earned the first doubles victory on court three, 6-1, over Ran Amar and Andre Rodeia, but the Tigers rallied forced the split with a 6-4 court two win. In the end, Pacific pulled out the 7-5 win on court one for the doubles point and the 1-0 advantage.
Pacific was able to hold the momentum to clinch the match via an Alam victory on singles court three. Magadan and Alonso were able to notch a pair of singles points for the Roadrunners in addition to their doubles win. Magadan defeated Terence Das in straight 6-3 sets on court two, while Alonso wrapped up the evening that closed over five hours after the initial start, topping Andre Rodeia on six, 6-1, 6-7 (6), 1-0 (6).
Quoting Coach Sergey Avdeyev
“We could not overcome obstacles and had too much energy wasted trying to figure out our court situation. Credit to Pacific, they managed this better and simply played better tennis than us today.”
