FORT WORTH, Texas – The UTSA men’s tennis team has advanced a pair of doubles teams to the semifinal of the ITA South Region Championships after three days of play at TCU’s Bayard H. Friedman Varsity Courts. The tandems of Alan Magadan/Tomás Pinho and Jackson Ross/Garrett Skelly both earned victories in Sunday’s quarterfinal to move on to Monday competition.
UTSA places a doubles team in the semifinal for the second consecutive year, after Magadan won the Texas Region Championship last season with now-graduated partner Sebastian Rodriguez.
Ross (Senior/San Antonio, Texas) and Garrett Skelly (Senior/The Woodlands, Texas) moved through pairs from UIW, Texas A&M and Baylor to face Texas Tech’s Tyler Stewart and Reed Collier, coming away with the 8-4 victory. The pair will be up first on Monday, squaring off with Lui Maxted and Duncan Chan from TCU at 9 a.m.
Coming into the week ranked Magadan (Senior/McAllen, Texas) and Pinho (Sophomore/Oporto, Portugal) defeated teams from UIW and Texas to reach the quarterfinal against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi’s Avery Zavala and Etienne Marty, earning the 8-7 (3) win. Taking the court again at noon, the Roadrunners duo will face TCU’s Pedro Vives and Sebastian Gorzny.
In singles play on Friday and Saturday, Pinho reached the round of 32 before falling to Baylor’s Zsombor Velcz, while Torres advanced to the round of 16 before dropping a tough three-setter to 45th-ranked Micah Braswell from Texas – who defeated teammate Magadan in the opening round.
