BREAKDOWN OF THE GAME
After a scoreless first inning, the Vaqueros got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the second to give UTRGV a 3-0 lead.
Coming in to pitch in the third inning, Maldonado sat down the Vaqueros on a flyout, strikeout and groundout. UTRGV added a couple more runs in the fourth frame to extend their advantage to 5-0.
In the fifth inning, the Roadrunners started to bite back as two solo homeruns by Hill and Smith cut UTSA's deficit to 5-2. Although allowing a couple of baserunners in the bottom of the inning, Riojas worked himself out of a jam to force a zero on the board. He followed that with a 1-2-3 sixth inning with a strikeout, popup and flyout.
In the eighth inning, Kinsgbery struck out the side to keep the Vaqueros from adding to their lead. UTSA scored one more run on a solo homerun by Valdez but it would not be enough as the Roadrunners fell to UTRGV by 5-3.
The Roadrunners fell to an 18-4 overall record, while UTRGV improved to a 10-10 overall record.
