No. 37 UTSA reels off 12th straight win with Charlotte sweep

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 37 UTSA Roadrunners men's tennis squad (14-4) earned its 12th consecutive victory and reached 14 wins for the first time since 2018-19 via a 4-0 sweep at Charlotte (6-9), Sunday at Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. In singles, UTSA overcame first-set losses to secure its fifth opponent sweep of the season.

The doubles matches provided a preview of the hotly-conteted fight for the day, but the Roadrunners opened up with a 2-0 doubles victory over the 49ers. Alan Magadan and Tiago Torres earned the first win on a clean 6-3 victory over Coy Simon and Matias Iturbe on court one. Over on two, Sebastian Rodriguez and Tomas Pinho triumphed in the tiebreaker to secure the doubles point on the 7-6 (1) victory.

With a slight lead in UTSA's possession, the 49ers put early pressure on the Roadrunners, as courts two and three saw first-set Charlotte wins, while courts one and six were tightly-contested opening sets with late ties. However, Danijal Muminovic broke the cycle and nudged UTSA in the right direction, smoothly winning his first set before shutting out Jhonny Acosta in a 6-3, 6-0 on court five for the first singles point.

After gutting out the tiebreaker win in the opening set, Torres moved UTSA one step closer with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 defeat of Simon on the first court.

Battling back from an opening-frame setback, Magadan rallied to two consecutive set wins, besting Abhi Vannemreddy on court two for the 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win, delivering the third singles point and the 4-0 UTSA victory.

Quoting Coach Sergey Avdeyev
"It was a much closer match than the score reflects. Once again, our boys stepped up when the moment got big. It was a huge clutch performance for our guys. We feel very strong right now. We're very happy to go 2-0 on the road and excited to go back home, recover and prepare for another big home match on Wednesday."
