SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA baseball team played its annual Fall World Series, in which the Black Team swept the Orange Team in the best-of-three matchup.
The first game of the series had a few key contributors offensively, as well as standout pitching performances for the black team. Garrett Poston and Josh Killeen both went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Garrett Brooks had a perfect 3-for-3 day with two RBI. Drake Smith pitched four innings and gave up no runs on only two hits while fanning three, earning the win and setting the tone on the mound. Daniel Schafer earned the save in the opening game.
Final Score Game 1: Black 6 - Orange 3
The second game of the series featured more of a pitchers' battle as players from both teams yielded some strong performances. John Chomko earned the start for the black team, turning in four innings of work and striking out eight while allowing just one run. Newcomer Ruger Riojas had a strong outing as well, allowing no runs in four innings pitched with five strikeouts. With the game going into extra innings, Jay Ward earned the win for the black team after two innings of work. A late inning rally by the black team earned them a comeback win in the bottom of the 10th to close out the Fall World Series. Killeen delivered the two-RBI double after a walk and single by Poston and Matt King.
Final Score Game 2: Black 3 - Orange 2
Josh Killeen (3-for-6, 1 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB) and Matt King (4-for-8, 3 R, 1 BB) earned the series Offensive Co-MVP's, while Drake Smith (1 W, 4 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 K, 0 BB) earned the Most Valuable Pitcher for the Fall World Series.
