UTSA receives No. 5 seed for C-USA Championships

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA men's tennis team gains the No. 5 seed and will go against Old Dominion on Friday at 1 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championships.

The Roadrunners concluded the 2022 season with a 11-11 record, earning a top 60 and 62 Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranking halfway through the season and claimed a 4-6 record at home. UTSA comes off a 4-3 victory over Lamar from last Saturday.

Currently in singles, Joao Ceolin (Palotina, Brazil) has gained the ITA ranking of No. 103. Previously in February, Ceolin earned the ITA ranking of No. 65. This season, Ceolin has defeated ranked foes in singles defeating No. 20 Micha Braswell of Texas and No. 56 Noah Schachter of Texas A&M. Ceolin earns the spot of the 6th most singles wins in UTSA men's tennis history.  Tiago Torres (Lisbon, Portugal) has also shined in singles this season as he claimed a 16-4 record in his first collegiate career.

In doubles, Torres and Sebastian Rodriguez (Trujillo, Peru) posted a 9-5 record overall. Ceolin and Javier Gonzalez (San Fernando, Chile) went 7-5 overall. Gonzalez claimed his 35th individual doubles win of his career- tying him for the 7th most individual doubles wins in UTSA men's tennis history with Robin Fernandes.

The Roadrunners have totaled a 60-55 (.522) mark in singles and a 28-26 (.519) record in doubles as a team for the 2022 season.

This marks the third straight C-USA Championships format that has seen the Roadrunners open the tournament with a match against the host school. In 2021, UTSA fought hard yet fell 4-3 to the fifth-seeded Charlotte in the Quarterfinals. The Roadrunners last won the C-USA Championships in 2015 with wins over Southern Miss, Old Dominion and Rice.
